What is the oldest Japanese map called and who was the cartographer?

    Question #92410. Asked by tragic_flawed. (Feb 15 08 6:21 PM)

    BRY2K

Ino Tadataka led a government-sponsored topographic survey group and organized the first scientific map of the entire nation of Japan (although earlier government survey maps of the entire country were made in the Tokugawa period), a map which became widely known as the Ino-zu.

Later, the Meiji government officially began using the Japanese term chizu in the education system, solidifying the place of the term chizu for "map" in Japanese.

Or were you seeking to go further back in time than this organized effort?

The oldest known map in Japan is a topographical drawing discovered on a stone wall inside a tomb in the city of Kurayoshi, in Tottori Prefecture, dated to the 6th century AD.
