Well, well.... I always thought it was a steam railroad engine (railroad rather than railway because it's American, see...). http://www.ironhorsepreservation.org/ However, with the use of 'euphemism' rather than 'nickname' you could be right.
Fascinating list.... But incomplete. When you listen to old blues and real R & B (not the rhubarb that's pinched the name) you'll find lots more....

The completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 was a major event in California history. The iron horse linked California with the rest of the nation and ushered in an era of economic consolidation.
