In what book does Humpty Dumpty explain to Alice words from Jabberwocky, saying, "Well, slithy means lithe and slimy ... You see it's like a portmanteau — there are two meanings packed up into one word"?

The quote is by Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871). In it Carroll defines the word portmanteau which he made up to cover other words he was making up like slithy.

In every nursery rhyme book I have seen, Humpty Dumpty is pictured as an egg. Nowhere in that poem does it mention what kind of creature this poor fellow that was sitting on a wall is, so why is it assumed that he would have been an egg?

When was it decided that Humpty Dumpty is an egg?

Where is it written that Humpty Dumpty was an egg?
