What's the difference between the world wide web and the internet, and who invented them?

The "world wide web" is technically the system of interlinked documents (webpages) that we can access. It was created by Tim Berners-Leein 1989.

The "internet" is the means by which we access those documents. It is a series of worldwide interconnected computer networks which "carry" the information that we see when we are logged on. In my opinion, there is no one person or group who can take credit for "inventing" the internet. You can read of many of the contributers in the link below.

"the internet" can refer to any set of interconnected networks. For example I have "an internet" in my house.
"the Internet" is the largest example of any internet.

Surely if you have one contained in your house it's an intranet? The one we had at the school where I worked grew from 15 machimes connected to one server (which had the hard disk in it!) to a full intranet which was connected to the internet.
