The "internet" is the means by which we access those documents. It is a series of worldwide interconnected computer networks which "carry" the information that we see when we are logged on. In my opinion, there is no one person or group who can take credit for "inventing" the internet. You can read of many of the contributers in the link below.
"the internet" can refer to any set of interconnected networks. For example I have "an internet" in my house.

Surely if you have one contained in your house it's an intranet? The one we had at the school where I worked grew from 15 machimes connected to one server (which had the hard disk in it!) to a full intranet which was connected to the internet.
