    		The Birdman Cult existed on Easter Island (Rapa Nui) until 1860. The birdman was declared each year as the winner of an involved competition to go to islet of Motu Nui, collect the first Sooty Tern egg of the season, and then return with it to the top of the seacliff of Rano Kao and the village of Orongo. Much honor was then vested on the Birdman including the rights of collecting the eggs and fledgelings and wild bird eggs from Motu Nui for the season for his clan. Make-Make was the chief god of the cult. The cult was suppressed by Christian missionaries in the 1860s.
