Based on a quality ranking of rubies by country it would appear that the traditional source of the world's finest rubies come from Burma (Myanmar), followed by Vietnam and then Sri Lanka.

Arguably, the finest emerald stone come from Colombia, where they are mined from the calcite veining bituminous limestone at Muzo, Coscuez, and Somondoco; these deposits were discovered in the late 1500s.

Sapphires are mined from alluvial deposits or from primary underground workings. The finest specimens are mined in Sri Lanka; both the Logan sapphire and the Star of Bombay originate from Sri Lankan mines.
Sapphires are also mined in Australia, Madagascar, Thailand and Myanmar. Madagascar leads the world in sapphire production (as of 2007) specifically in and around the city of Ilakaka.
