It is said that DuPont heir Robert R.M. Carpenter, (who turned control over to his son, Bob, Jr.)tried to change the team's name (and vicariously, its image) to the "Blue Jays" after a city wide vote on a new nickname.
However, "Phillies" continued to appear on the team's jerseys, with a Blue Jay appearing on the sleeves. Students at Johns Hopkins University, whose teams are also known as the Blue Jays, vehemently protested Carpenter's decision, claiming that it dishonored their school.
The nickname was quietly dropped in 1946.
