When was the Domesday clock closest to midnight, and why?

Two minutes away from Midnight. The reason was because of all the climate change going on. Also nuclear instability and the possibility of nuclear war.

"Over the past 60 years, the Doomsday clock has now moved backwards and forwards 18 times. It advanced to two minutes before midnight - its closest proximity to doom - in 1953 after the United States and the Soviet Union detonated hydrogen bombs."

This so-called "Doomsday clock" is currently set to five minutes before midnight, for what that's worth.
