Why do we say we 'increase something threefold', when the act of folding actually decreases something in size?

Because the definition, as given by Websters is being three times as great or as many.

Folding may decrease something in size, but it also increases the number of parts and this is where the suffix -fold gets its meaning of to multiply by. Folded in two gives you two pieces or increases it twofold.

Why does the gauge of a wire increase as the actual diameter decreases?

Maths problem: Humans contribute 3% of CO2 currently. Does that mean they increase the amount by 3%, or something more complex. I can't cope with maths but guessing it's either the proportion 3 is of 100 or a simple 103% total which would be exactly 3%. So does producing 3% from a base of zero (for the maths rather than my example) increase by exactly 3% or are there more steps to calculate the increase?

CO2 has gone up around 30% since the industrial revolution, yet humans contribute 3% of its total. Is it possible for this to build up to a 30% increase or does it mean other areas contributed to that increase as well as human activity?
