    Question #93959. author asks:

What part of present Kenya was once controlled by Germany?

    BRY2K

Most historians consider that the colonial history of Kenya dates from the establishment of a German protectorate over the Sultan of Zanzibar's coastal possessions in 1885.

Yes, and then the question is: What were the coastal possessions of the Sultan of Zanzibar?

    Does this help at all?

"The coast of Kenya with Mombasa etc... was nominally a possession of the Sultan of Zanzibar,"

Yes, the Sultan of Zanzibar controlled large parts of the coastline called Zanj, roughly the coast from Somalia to Mozambique.

    Lamu

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamu

Interestingly no reference of this in the wikipedia.
My information comes from the (well researched and venerable) Michel Stamp Catalogue, which states that there were German post offices in Zanzibar and Lamu.

Another name is Wituland or Witu Protectorate

Wituland (with Lamu) is the correct answer. The Germans controlled Wituland 1885-1890. This map shows the situation of the territory.

I am not sure to what extent Lamu was controlled by Germany, but there was a German post office here 1888-1891.
I don't think Lamu was formally a part of the German colony Wituland (Deutsch-Witu).

I think this German map shows that Lamu was not a part of Wituland.
