    Why did Kuwait become a sovereign state and not a part of Iraq?

    		Iraq gained independence from the UK in 1932 where as Kuwait did not gain indepenence until 1961. It was found in the 1930's that Kuwait had the 5th largest oil rerserve in the world. Due to the richness of their resourses it would have been in the intrest of those with power in Kuwait to be independent of Iraq. This is my personal speculation.

    		It is not so much the Reserve, which is abundant, but more the Gulf access. Port control. Someone was thinking most pro actively back in the day!!!!!

    		Port control may have been a point at the time, although Iraq today have other ports on the Gulf, such as Umm Qasr.
