    Why did Kyrgyzstan change its name from Kirgizia?

    It was the name they took when they became independant from the Soviet Union.

    Kyrgyzstan -- In the old Turkic language, kyrg means "40" and yz means "tribes," so the word itself means "40 tribes." The Kyrgyz originated in Mongolia.

    Yes, and the Central Asian countries changed many of their geographical names to sound more "Kyrgyz", more "Kazakh", more "Uzbek", more "Turkmen", more "Tajik" and so on.
