In the same year the Bayer Corporation started marketing Aspirin, they also had another drug which they thought would be much more sucessful. What is the name of the drug they thought would be such a hit?

Question #94057. Asked by rxbigdawg. (Mar 28 08 5:49 PM)

From 1898 through to 1910 heroin was marketed as a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough medicine for children. Bayer marketed heroin as a cure for morphine addiction before it was discovered that heroin is converted to morphine when metabolized in the liver, and as such, "heroin" was basically only a quicker acting form of morphine. The company was somewhat embarrassed by this new finding and it became a historical blunder for Bayer.

Dreser's group was soon busy testing Felix Hoffman's next chemical success: diacetylmorphine (which the Bayer team soon branded as heroin because of the heroic feeling it gave them).

You are exactly correct! Heroin was released within a month of Aspirin. The company did not have high hopes for aspirin but they thought for sure that heroin would be a big hit. Well they were correct in it being a hit, but not for the reasons they wanted.
