    Deborah Read (February 14, 1708 - December 24, 1774)

Franklin proposed to fifteen-year-old Read in 1724, but her mother would not consent to the marriage, citing Franklin's pending trip to England and financial instability. While Franklin was away in England, having been stranded there by Sir William Keith's failure to follow through on promises of support, Read married John Rogers, who fled to Barbados in 1725 to avoid debt. Read accepted another proposal from Franklin when he returned to the colonies two years later, but because the status of Rogers was unknown due to the lack of communication, they were not free to marry formally. Instead, they began a common-law marriage in 1730.

A man is 6 years older than his wife. Four years ago he noticed he had been married to her for half his life. How old will the man be when he has been married for fifty years, if in ten years' time his wife will have been married to him for two-thirds of her life?

An unusual way for a composer to get to know his future wife - she was sent to row him over a lake. There's no record of the colour of the lake, but there's one colour it was unlikely to be - but that came later. (A herald might dispute a part of that statement.) The wife, who married her passenger twice, is much better known by a name not her original one. Who was she, who did she become, and why did her husband's best known collaborator look better with his mouth shut (and why is this somewhat ironic)?

His first wife was below his social standing, having been a servant, but they had three very lovely daughters - who all married aristocrats. Only four days after her death, he remarried - at 80! - and really caused a scandal. She was an actress half his age. One of his grandchildren (not the one who was in another scandal) married a husband with a very appropriate surname. The business that the person sought here operated is still going (but not now in the family), and ultra-respectable and secretive. Who am I looking for?
