What was the least populated member of the League of Nations?

Question #94468. Asked by author. (Apr 10 08 7:35 PM)

This is what I was able to find out..
Djibouti seems to be the least populated..

Arab League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arab League Member states divided in the two continents of Asia and Africa .... while the least populated is Djibouti, with close to 500000 inhabitants. ...
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_League

I believe I have a correction..I kept searching since that answer I first gave didn't seem right & I'm hoping that maybe this answers the question.

The number of sovereign states has steadily increased over the past few decades and is rapidly approaching two hundred. Many of these countries are small. The median country size in terms of population is around five million people. Tuvalu, the smallest state with a seat at the United Nations, has 11,000 people. The smallest country in the sample studied by Winters and Martins (W&M) is Niue, a self-governing country in free association with New Zealand, with only 2,000 inhabitants.

I am talking about The League of Nations, which existed 1920-1946 and then was replaced by the United Nations.
So you have to look for states that existed then.

If you take today's populations, it would be Luxemburg, having the only population with well under 1 million.
Keeping in mind that Liberia has the highest population growth in the world, it could be that Liberia had fewer inhabitants than Luxemburg in 1925 (not very likely though).

I admit, this one is tricky.

According to this 1920 map it's actually Hedjaz, with a population of 350,000.
Hedjaz later became a part of Saudi Arabia.

The problem with the previous map is maybe that it only deals with the founding members of the League of Nations?
Because, as Trivia Paul says, Luxembourg should be a candidate.
Luxembourg had a population of ca 246,000 in 1905.
Not a founding member, Luxembourg still joined the organization in its founding year, 1920.

This list clearly shows that the population of Liberia was larger than that of Luxembourg at the time.

One of the tricky things is that Trivia Paul's Wiki list of League of Nations members do not include Hedjaz. But Hedjaz was a founding member, as this link to the Treaty of Versailles shows.
