In 1963 America adopted the postal code, but named it Zone Improvement Plan code or ZIP code for short. The Zip code is used in all 50 states as well as the American territories. Since the zoning was implemented at the same time the first ZIP code would be the one with the lowest number and that would be 00601 which is for Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. The lowest ZIP code for any of the U.S. States is 01001 which is for Agawam, Massachusetts.
