If any, what was the first ZIP code ever designated, and what region did it cover?

Question #94471. Asked by kyleisalive. (Apr 10 08 9:11 PM)

In 1963 America adopted the postal code, but named it Zone Improvement Plan code or ZIP code for short. The Zip code is used in all 50 states as well as the American territories.

Since the zoning was implemented at the same time the first ZIP code would be the one with the lowest number and that would be 00601 which is for Adjuntas, Puerto Rico.

The lowest ZIP code for any of the U.S. States is 01001 which is for Agawam, Massachusetts.

The highest ZIP code for any of the U.S. States is 99950 for Ketchikan, Alaska.

The ZIP code is the US name for postal code. As far as I can see all US ZIP codes were introduced simultaneously for all USAP regions.

If you mean "what was the first postal code in the world?", meaning numbering geographical areas for postal delivery purposes, the answer is Germany in 1941.

"Germany was the first country to introduce a postal code system, in 1941. The United Kingdom followed in 1959 and the United States in 1963."
