What is the difference between a Moslem and a Muslim?

    Question #94600. Asked by star_gazer. (Apr 14 08 2:48 AM)

Muslim comes from Islam which means peace and submission to the will of God and Moslem is the Orientalist version. Some people feel offended when called Moslem as it is the wrong pronounciation of Muslim and since its a Arabic word it should be pronounced properly otherwsie the meaning may change. For example Moslem if taken literally could come from the word zulm hence making the meaning of a terrorist come to mind!

I would say about forty years.

This is just a different way of spelling and pronouncing the same Arabic word. "Muslim" is the current most accepted way; preceded by "Moslem," "Musselman," "Mohammedan," "Mohametan," etc. You will find the American Founding Fathers using some variation of "Mohametan."

As a Malaysian, I would have to say that they mean the same thing. Just different spellings. Howevere, "Muslim" is more preferred then "Moslem".
