Who was the French general that represented France at the signing of the surrender by Nazi Germany at the end of World War II in Europe?

    Jean de Lattre de Tassigny.

His name is given as "F. de Lattre-Tassigny" in the Instrument of Surrender signed in Berlin, May 8, 1945.
Look about a quarter of the way down the page. It starts at "Page 42" and his name is on "Page44." (All one page on your computer.)

Hm..Hope this does not invalidate the whole document.

    Now that would be something.

I assumed it was another initial of his or the abbreviation of a title. Can't find that that's so. Perhaps it's a typo? "F" is typed with the left forefinger and "J" with the right. ??

My first link seems not to work. This one does.

Interesting that on The Free Dictionary, one should find 'This article is available to subscribers only'..... Both links worked for me, by the way - as far as that block anyway.

The zhukov page is a typing out of the document, (identical to Wikipedia's version). Here is the original (about halfway down the page), with Jean's slightly ambiguous signature. To me that's a J - that's not far off the J in my sig! - but to some it can be an F. (Personal experience there...) The names of the signatories are not typed on the document, just their ranks. http://www.anesi.com/GermanySurrenders.htm
