The film with the most Best Actor nominations (3) was Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), for Clark Gable, Franchot Tone, and Charles Laughton.
No male performer has yet won three Best Actor awards. Eight actors have won the Best Actor Oscar twice: Tracy, Brando, Cooper, Hanks, Hoffman, Nicholson, March and Day-Lewis. Among them are the only two actors who have received two consecutive Best Actor statuettes:
Spencer Tracy for Captains Courageous (1937) and Boys Town (1938)
Tom Hanks for Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994)
To your specific question, I would comment that actor Jack Nicholson has 12 career nominations, won 3 Oscars - two of them being for best actor.

Thanks for the reply. I have always thought that it would be Hanks.
