In Bram Stoker's original 1897 novel, "Dracula," Dr. Abraham Van Helsing was an Amsterdam academic. (Think Anthony Hopkins, or Laurence Olivier, or Peter Cushing, all of whom have played the good doctor on screen.)

"Van Helsing," however, recasts its title character as a globe-trotting adventurer.
