He was certainly the first author to own a typewriter - he purchased one of the 400 Remington typewriters sold at the back end of 1874. The fact that 'Mark Twain' was published in 1876 certainly lends credence to the claim that it was the first novel written on a typwriter. The first commercially available typewriters were available from 1872 but mostly used by telegraphers, short-hand reporters, lawyers and professional men. Allan Pinkerton (of detective agency fame) had one of the first.
