First discovered in the 1930s, this creature lives on an exclusively floral diet. It is the mascot for at least two American schools, but its name is far more associated with four wheeled transport nowadays. Who was the discoverer of this intriguing creature, and who were his nephew and far better known niece?

    Question #94820. Asked by Baloo55th. (Apr 19 08 8:23 AM)

Could the creature be Eugene the Jeep from the series Popeye?

It has been theorized that the Jeep vehicle was named after this character: soldiers in World War II may have nicknamed the machine after the then-popular character because they shared an ability to "go anywhere".

In the context of the comic strip, Eugene the Jeep was a gift to Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl from her Uncle Ben who found Eugene in Africa. The Jeep is a yellow creature about the size of a dog who walks on his hind legs. He has a bear-like head and ears but a large nose, long tail, and protruding stomach. The Jeep's diet consists only of orchids.

Uncle Ben discovered Eugene, his neice being the character Olive Oyl and boyfriend being Popeye?

Yay! A rather little known member of the Popeye strip now, I believe. Known as a 'Jeep' because that's the noise he made. One bit missing though - who was the nephew of Uncle Ben?

That's the one. His mate Ham Gravy was Olive's original boyfriend.
