In the film 'The Village' a group of people live a 19th century lifestyle, with the younger generation not knowing of the existence of the modern age. A few years ago, I read a children's fiction book with a similar theme, except that 'the village' was a tourist attraction, and a girl escapes to find medicine for her mother. Can anyone help me find what book this was, and also say whether anywhere in the world people live purposely in the past, but not as a tourist attraction?

Those that choose a traditional lifestyle are called Amish. They don't use electricity as it means a reliance on those outside of their community. They see themselves as self-reliant. They also dress traditionally. They exist in (where else?) the USA.

I don't know for sure what you mean by purposely living in the past. Are you talking about those who have lived in modern society, found it lacking, and decided to live a lifestyle befitting their ancestors? If this is the case, there are various religious sects around the world who have at least somewhat adopted this philosophy. There have been social experiments which entertained these ideals as well. There may well be some operating as of this moment. There are also various indigenous tribes living in the remote corners of the world whose existence has changed little from the times of their ancestors. Either of these choices should give you a reference point to start your research.
