The short version: The more cholesterol in the blood, the more likely that the vessels will develop plaque deposits. HDL High-density lipoproteins slow down this plaque formation. Exercise has little direct bearing on blood cholesterol, HOWEVER, exercise is known to increase the levels of HDL -- In turn, HDL removes the plaque.
