Carlisle had Jim Thorpe and the touchpad has an octothorpe (#).

Actually, I found the same connection (so kudos to knud77):
An octothorpe's (number sign - #) origins: reportedly a jocular coinage by Bell Labs supervisor Don Macpherson in the early 1960s, from octo- (“eight”) (with reference to the eight points) plus -thorpe (after 1912 Olympic medalist Jim Thorpe, in whom Macpherson had some interest.)
The Carlisle Indian Industrial School is most widely remembered for its star American football player, Jim Thorpe and their team the Carlisle Indians, coached by Glenn Scobey "Pop" Warner.
