What was a first birthday party for a female like during Victorian times? Besides the obvious, why was it thrown?

Asides from celebrating one's birth, birthday parties afforded parents the opportunity to allow their children to practice and improve their social behaviors. These parties were rigid and adult-oriented (nothing like what we imagine today). Yes, there was a cake and candles, and even presents, but the rest of the event was a mini-lesson in etiquette.
