    I would appreciate some clarification - Italy was a geographical entity then but far from being a political one. Many states existed (including San Marino which is still there) under a variety of forms of government ranging from republic through monarchy to (perhaps) theocracy. And many of them hated the others, especially the nearest ones....

    The Querelle des Bouffons (English: War of the Comic Actors) was the name given to a battle of musical philosophies in France which took place between 1752 and 1754. The controversy concerned the relative merits of French and Italian opera.
