Actually, the more commonly used translation for 'island group' is simply eilandengroep. 'eilandgebied' is a technical term designating an administrative division within the Netherlands Antilles. Wikipedia translates 'eilandgebied' it as 'island area', which is also its literal translation.
The "eilandgebieden" are Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, southern Sint Maarten.
