Round robin is a contest where each competitor will play each other at least once. A loss does not necessarily mean elimination.
Origin is probably from 17th century France where the term was ‘ruban rond’. This was system where government officials signed grievance petitions by placing ribbons in a circle. This way it was difficult to tell who signed first at the risk of being beheaded.
