    		Athens placed second in the voting for awarding of the 1996 Olympics which was the 100th anniverary of the modern olympics. Athens had hosted the innaugaral 1896 games. Atlanta was the winning bidder.

    Athens it is. They did eventually rehost the games in 2004.
