    		It was Eddie Slovik, and is the only known American solider to be executed for desertion since the Civil War.

    ...wasn't quick enough, though! -) Anyway, I'd like to recommend "The Execution of Private Slovik" by William Bradford Huie, which I read the other day. Very moving book!

    		There was also a television movie about the execution, Slovik was clearly an unstable person but Ike insisted that he die.
