What was not discovered and not known to the outerworld until the invention of the aeroplane?

Question #95991. Asked by armindasantana. (May 23 08 3:45 PM)

    Arpeggionist

A good number of things were completely unknown to science until airplanes were invented. Among these are the the designs in the desert grounds of Arizona, made by Native Americans, which which were discovered by pilots flying over them. Another discovery was the Yellowstone caldera, or rather that Yellowstone National Park was in essence a supervolcano. Yet another discovery was the fictitious nature of the sound barrier - the myth stating that an object cannot surpass the speed of sound being shattered.
