"Mind Your Own Business" was the title of a Hank Williams song and the first motto printed on what?

Question #96237. Asked by armindasantana. (Jun 01 08 10:48 AM)

    The Fugio cent.

On 21 April 1787, the Continental Congress of the United States authorized a design for an official penny, later referred to as the Fugio cent because of its image of the sun shining down on a sundial with the caption, "Fugio" (Latin: I flee).

The image and the word combine to mean "Time Flees". This coin was reportedly designed by Benjamin Franklin, and as a reminder to its holders, he put at its bottom the message, "Mind Your Business". This design had also been used on the "Continental dollar" (issued as coins of unknown real denomination, and in paper notes of different fractional denominations) in February of 1776.

Of course Hank Williams was demanding his privacy while Ben Franklin was advocating industriousness.

"Oh, the woman on our party line's the nosiest thing
She picks up her receiver when she knows it's my ring
Why don't you mind your own business......."

"'Mind Your Business' was Franklin's proposal for a national motto and he meant that if each American paid attention to his or her own business, all America would prosper."
