Who planted The Hairy Tree in Girvan?

Question #96410. Asked by zbeckabee. (Jun 06 08 8:53 PM)

I believe that it was planted by a daughter of Cannibal Sawney Bean.

The legend states that one of Bean's many daughters escaped the mayhem of family life and settled in Girvan, where legend has it she planted The Hairy Tree. However, after the capture of her family, Elspeth's identity was uncovered by angry locals, who hanged her from the bough of The Hairy Tree.

Alexander "Sawney" Bean who planted The Hairy Tree in the Ayrshire town of Girvan (which is visible from Ailsa Craig). Local legend holds that Elspeth tried (unsuccessfully) to swim to Ailsa Craig to escape the mob who later hanged her from The Hairy Tree.
