BRY2K, this may not at all be what you are looking for but after much Googling this is the best I can come up with.
"She (The Flying Fish) was designed in all her details and built by Mr. McKay at East Boston."
"MacKaye recently assisted in the investigation of the Kent State shootings (of which Miller, Krause and Scheuer were victims) when he helped clean up a field recording made by a Kent State student who recorded audio of the incident on a reel-to-reel tape machine from his dormitory windowsill"
McKay = MacKaye

Hmmm, close but no cigar, darth.
If you were to focus on the full name of the colleague in the second part of my question you would be closer to solving it. Good luck!

Here's a boost to help someone else finish --
KENT STATE:
William Schroeder is the colleague. A total of 67 shots were fired in 13 seconds. Four students were killed: Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder.

After a very long search I find that "The first USS Flying Fish (1838), a schooner, was formerly the New York pilot boat Independence; purchased at New York 3 August 1838; and upon joining her squadron in Hampton Roads 12 August 1838 was placed under command of Passed Midshipman S. R. Knox."
The full name of the fourth student killed on that fateful day at Kent State was William Knox Schroeder.

The connection is Knox.
