    They were both from Australia.

Dame Nellie Melba, GBE born Helen Porter Mitchell, legendary Australian opera soprano and one of the most famous sopranos, was the first Australian to achieve international recognition in the form. She and Dame May Whitty both became the first entertainers to become a DBE in 1918.

Melba was born at "Doonside" in Richmond (now an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria).

Joseph Leslie Theodore Taylor (Squizzy Taylor) (b. 29 June 1885 in Brighton, Victoria d. 27 October 1927) was a Melbourne based gangster. He earned the nickname 'Squizzy' due to an ulcerated, droopy left eyelid and the fact that he ran in a 'squizzy' motion.
