What country is named for a biblical patriarch?

Question #96649. Asked by author. (Jun 14 08 8:57 PM)

Israel was named after a Biblical patriarch:

    "Israel:

Israel takes its name from the biblical patriarch Jacob, later known as Israel, literally meaning "struggled with God/he struggles with God". According to the account in the Book of Genesis, Jacob wrestled with a stranger at a river ford and won--through perseverance. God then changed his name to Israel, signifying that he had deliberated with God and won, as he had wrestled and won with men. "

Some also claim that Armenia is named for a biblical patriarch.

    Quote:
    Origin of name:

from the legendary patriarch Armenak. The name Hayastan comes from Haik, an ancient king, who according to Armenian tradition was the son of the Biblical Togarmah, son of Gomer, son of Japheth, son of Noah, whose ark landed on Mount Ararat.
