He scored the winning goal in the United States’ sensational win against England at the Football (Soccer) World Cup in 1950, although he was not a US citizen then and never became one. Who was he, where was he from, and why was he allowed to play the match?

Question #96776. Asked by author. (Jun 19 08 9:47 AM)

    BRY2K

    He was Joseph Edouard Gaetjens.

He was from Port-au-Prince, Haiti (born 1924).

Although Gaetjens was not a U.S. citizen, he had declared his intention of becoming one, and under the rules of the United States Soccer Football Association at that time was allowed to play. However, Gaetjens never actually did gain American citizenship.
