Less than two years later, a large force of Russians and Turks, who had allied against Napoleon, took the island and this was the only period when Corfu came under Turkish influence. The Turk-Russian authorities allowed the Ionian islands to form a semi-independent state and from 1800-1807 the Septinsular Republic became the first Greek state to exist since the fall of Constantinople in 1435. In 1807 the French reoccupied Corfu. During their two periods in charge, the French established schools and printing presses, made Orthodoxy the official religion and, to our benefit today, built the terrace which is known today as the 'Liston'.
