    		"While Ghana is a key staging post, several other countries are used by the smugglers. Guinea Bissau, a former Portuguese colony with a long history of coups and corruption, is probably a more important conduit. Mauritania and Senegal, both former French colonies with virtually no ability to police their borders, are two other staging posts."

    The drugs trade is generally run by Colombians based in these West African states. They often enjoy a level of impunity by passing on a share of their earnings to corrupt officials.
