I work a lot with needles; tapestry, tatting, sewing, etc. These needles lose their luster with prolonged use and become hard to use, especially the tatting needles. My question is, without replacing them, how can I make them look like they are new so there is less friction?

SILICONE -- Used to reduce friction on sewing needles.

If the needles are tarnished, I'd use a mild jewelry cleaner or tarnish remover before applying silicone. If the needle finish is actually worn off, there's not much you can do in the way of revamping -- aside from a good clean and silicone application.

"The standard tomato pincushion...seems to have been around forever and is filled with sawdust and wool roving. The wool roving contains lanolin and prevents the pins from rusting. The strawberry that is attached to pincushions is filled with fine sand or emery. The abrasive action of these fillers, remove dirt and rust, keeping the pin or needle sharp and smooth."

This site recommends using a bar of soap for a pin cushion. See tip #38. Also 2, 13, and 14.
