"[Desert] truffle collectors hunt for them in the early hours of the morning. The sun light reflecting off of the dew drops on the sand particles helps detect the cracked bumps in the sand, which are the tell tale signs of a truffle emerging. Because desert truffles grow so close to the surface, there is no need to use pigs or trained dogs to find them. Experienced truffle collectors can detect an emerging truffle from a distance, and often return season after season to the same areas, keeping the locations of their favorite spots a secret."
