It is actually located on the Judean Mountains, between the Mediterranean Sea and the northern tip of the Dead Sea, modern Jerusalem has grown up around the Old City.

The old city is located on the Moriyah mount (aka Temple mount). A Hebrew proverb notes that it is sorrounded by (higher) mountains, e.g. Mount of Olives, Mount Zion, Mount Scopus and more. The elevation of modern day Jerusalem varies from 650m to 850m which is most evident on the few snowy days we get from time to time when snow accumulates only on the higher parts of the city.
