What university helped develop the roof flaps on NASCAR stock cars?

    Question #97151. Asked by tonythe1. (Jul 01 08 3:39 PM)

That would be the University of Michigan -- Jack Rouse who is in Michigan helped to design the roof flaps -- NASCAR introduces roof flaps as an experiment early in the 1994 Winston Cup season, as a potential solution to cars getting airborne when turned backwards.

This answer may be wrong and the correct answer may be the post by jaknginger. The HANS device (NOT the roof flaps) was co-developed by Dr. Robert Hubbard, a professor of engineering at Michigan State University, and his brother-in-law, former IMSA car driver Jim Downing. However, ERU claims to have assisted in the "redesign" of NASCAR roof flaps -- So, we may well be back to square one.

And of course, a third option:

This paper describes the effort initiated by the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), and joined by General Motors Corporations (GM), Ford Motor Company (FORD) and Roush Industries, Inc. (Roush) to develop and manufacture a roof- mounted, aero flap system (referred hereafter as "roof flaps") for race car applications.

Why does NASCAR run 43 cars in a race?

I was a cavalry officer, a General, a Commander, a pirate, and a lofty commissioned Admiral. I helped develop, and was an accomplished artist, in an itaglio printing process. An alloy is indirectly named after me. I helped found and was the first director of one of the oldest corporations in the Western world, one that is still in operation. But my name would probably be best remembered today in the field of science, for a curiosity that bears my name that I supposedly discovered/invented. Who am I and what's the curiosity?
