It depends on the type, of there are several. The first type, which is the best known, is the protocommunist model of settlement, known as a "kibbutz" (Hebrew for "gathering"). Kibbutzim themselves come in several varieties, ranging from the entirely socialist models to the religious kibbutz (such as EinTzurim) to the small economic municipality. Not all are farms - Ein Gedi is a botanical garden and resort, and Ein Bokek is entirely a resort town.
Other types include the "moshav", which is not built on the socialist models.

Interesting to note other Hebrew words which are derived from the same root of "kibbutz" (K.B.TZ.): "kvutza" (team), "kabtzan" (beggar), "kovetz" (file), "kibbutz galuyot" (the gathering of the Jewish diaspora to Israel).
