Where did the song "Clap-On, Clap-Off" begin? Am I right in guessing it's an old American commercial?

The Clapper. For turning lights on and off. Too funny were the skits after the commercial first came out. Roseanne had stuff on her show too. Clapper was over 20 years ago

The song is based on army cadence.

From Bruce Almighty:
God: "(Claps twice and the light goes off.)" Bruce: "You install the clapper?" God: "No, but catchy jingle, isn't it? Clap on, clap off, clap on, clap off, the clapper. Just can't get it out of my head." Bruce: "Well, good luck with that. I'm gonna go now."
