Did California ever have its own currency?

The answer would be yes. The gold rush started in 1848 and created gold to use for purchases, this lead to banks issuing bank notes and drafts which was used as local paper currency. Later on the gold was sent to the US mints and banks in-exchange for the national currency. California didnt become a state until 1850.

Both the Spanish Reales, the Mexican Peso, the Russian Ruble and the US Dollar have been the currency of California, but these were not "California's own" currency.

California did mint "their own" coins in the gold rush period, but the currency was the US dollar.
