Okay, I'm half way there GG.
Meir Ariel was the famed "singing paratrooper".
Meir Ariel started his career at the time of the Six Day War in 1967. He was one of the paratroopers who set the Old City of Jerusalem free. He was nicknamed 'The Singing Paratrooper' (Hatzanchan Hamezamer).
Still stumbling over the book with the American author.

Hemingway's "Islands in the Stream"?
Aharon Amir won the Tchernichovsky Prize for translation in 1951 and the Israel Prize in 2003. He was often known in Israel thanks to a popular song by Meir Ariel, which cited Amir's translation of Hemigway's Islands in the Stream.

Hats off, Brian.
"Reading 'Islands in the Stream' by Ernest Hemingway / Nicely translated by Aharon Amir" (Meir Ariel, "A Quite Night Had Passed On Our Forces In Suez").
