What ‘black’ metal gave blacksmiths their name?

    Question #97648. Asked by storky1. (Jul 17 08 8:34 PM)

Blacksmiths work with "black" metals, typically iron. The black color comes from fire scale, a layer of oxides that forms on the surface of the metal during heating.

The "black" part of "blacksmith," however, is much easier to trace. A blacksmith is a smith who works in "black" metal -- iron -- as opposed to the "white" metals such as silver or tin.
