What species of crustaceans are always flattened on their sides?

    Question #98085. Asked by FISHFREAK7. (Jul 30 08 1:56 AM)

    Crabs (infraorder Brachyura)?

Crabs are crustaceans with flattened bodies and legs adapted for scurrying sideways, sometimes at high speed. As they grow, they shed their exoskeletons, which can often be found in rock pools.

True crabs possess flattened bodies, an abdomen located on their bottom side and short antennae.

Of course, amphipods are flattened sideways and have a distinctive head and 13 body segments. They
have two pairs of antennae and seven pairs of legs, the first two modified to grasp food. Gills
are present on the thoracic segments, which are not covered by a carapace. They have three tail
appendages, or ‘uropods’, at the end of the abdomen.

Guess I am struggling with which "side" is always flattened.

    Shrimp -- Suborder Natantia

The term shrimp refers to all crustaceans of the suborder Natantia (marine and freshwater shrimps and prawns). They are typically semi-transparent and flattened from side to side, with a powerful, flexible abdomen.
